John Smaligo was born on September 17, 1975, in Council Bluffs,
Iowa. He was raised in Owasso where he graduated high school in
1994. John attended the University of Central Oklahoma, earning his
B.A. in 1998.
In 2000 John was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives
where he served three terms. During this time he was elected to the
position of Republican Caucus Vice-Chairman in 2002 and was
eventually appointed Assistant Majority Floor Leader in 2004. John
also chaired the Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Select
Agencies.
John points out that his most significant contribution during his
service in the legislature is helping rewrite the rules of procedure
for the House of Representatives. Those changes have brought greater
accountability and more openness to the legislative process.
In 2006 John decided to put his legislative experience to use in
local government and made the decision to run for Tulsa County
Commissioner. The first Republican to ever hold the District 1 seat,
John believes that his bipartisan approach in the legislature will
enable him to better represent the most diverse district in Tulsa
County.
John married Lesa Borin in the summer of 2006, and is now the proud
stepfather of Preslea. The Smaligo family resides in Owasso and is
actively involved at St. Henry Catholic Church.
